Zookeeper killed by lion after leaving ‘gate open’
ABEOKUTA, Nigeria (WKRC) – A zookeeper was killed by a lion after failing to lock the animal’s enclosure when he went to feed it.
Babaji Daule, 35, was a trained lion handler who worked at the Presidential Library Wildlife Park in Nigeria. Police said “the lion inflicted serious fatal injuries to the man’s neck,” according to BBC.Police also said the lion had to be shot to “release its grip on the handler.”
The wildlife park released a statement saying the zookeeper had taken some guests to see the lion’s feeding routine after hours on Saturday, according to BBC.
Presidential Library Wildlife Park’s statement also said:
The zookeeper, apparently, feeling comfortable with the animal, left the safety protection gate open and proceeded to feed the animal. He was mauled by the animal and died on the spot.
To prevent further mutilation of the body, the animal was put down immediately by personnel of the park.
BBC said another zookeeper was attacked and killed by a lion less than a year from this incident, and that the recent incident has raised concerns about the country’s regulations, management of zoos and handling of wild animals.
